Information and
Online Resources
for Parents

Intended primarily for parents of students in David Cohen's Facing History and Ourselves classes or Reading class.

Last update: October 1, 2007
(More resources coming soon - hopefully)

***NOTE***  In-Class is now up and running for this year's classes!  However, grades will be posted online in a password protected
web page, rather than through the In-Class gradebook.  Students will know when the first posting goes live.  Thanks for your patience.

Thank you for checking this page. You can use this web site in a couple of ways. First of all, by clicking on your child's class (above), you can review information about the curriculum and assignments, and access resources that are there for students.  Students benefit from parental interest and involvement in their studies, but please resist the temptation to do things for students that they need to do for themselves.  (Read more in-depth advice).  If you have concerns or need more information, please email me or call the school (using the information above).

A second way to use this web site through the links found below - an expanding and evolving collection.  These links provide a variety of information and resources. Please email me if you find this page or any of the links useful (or to let me know if any links are not working properly).

Finding books that your teenager might read for fun -
here are some links you might find helpful, especially if it's time for gifts.

Facing History and Ourselves -
Facing History and Ourselves is a national educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.  Visit the web site to learn more.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards -
I am one of several National Board Certified Teachers at Palo Alto High School, and about 70 in PAUSD.  Find out more about the National Board here.

A Deafening Silence - Ted Sizer, a leader in education reform, discusses the failure of political debates to address the most crucial problems facing public education.  (A bit dated, but the main ideas remain pertinent).
