Paly Choir Chosen for National Choral Festival

Young singers will train and perform with acclaimed men's chorus Chanticleer

Palo Alto Online News article — by Rebecca Wallace

Palo Alto High School's Concert Choir has been chosen as one of 12 high school groups from across the country to take part in a new national choral festival.

The acclaimed San Francisco men's chorus Chanticleer is hosting its first National Youth Choral Festival in March as part of its education programs. Some 400 student singers will come to the city to immerse themselves in the choral art for four days, getting coaching from Chanticleer singers and taking master classes from mezzo-sopranos Frederica von Stade and Zheng Cao.

The festival will culminate in a March 29 concert at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. The 12 choirs, Chanticleer, von Stade and Cao will perform under the direction of Chanticleer music director Matthew Oltman. The program includes the United States premiere of "L'Annonciation," a cantata by French composer Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur.

Ben Johns, Chanticleer's director of education, said the festival is an expansion of the group's previous Bay Area Youth Choral Festival. High schools from Hawaii to Virginia will be represented.

"It's my hope that through this festival the relevance of music education in our schools will leave an indelible impression on our collective social consciousness," he said in a press release.

Besides the Paly choir, which is directed by Michael Najar, there are four other Bay Area groups taking part. They include the San Francisco School of the Arts High School Choir and the Lowell Choir.

The March 29 concert begins at 8 p.m. at 201 Van Ness Ave (map).
