Math Analysis Honors

~~ Mrs. Williams & Ms. Chute ~~

Course Guide 2001 - 2002

Welcome to Analysis Honors !!!

Equipment Needed: Paper (binder and graph), pencils, 3 ring notebook, graphing calculator (TI-89 is highly recommended). You are expected to bring these materials, plus your textbook everyday.

Contests: You will all participate in the AMC. Failure to do so will result in a loss in points. You are also expected to participate in other on- and off- site contests whenever possible.

Grades: Semester grades are based on assignments, quizzes, unit tests, class activities, and midterm/final exams. Quarter grades are considered progress grades for each semester.

Your grade will be made up of the following components:

Homework 25% (daily, in class, and other assignments)

Assessment 75% (quizzes, tests, final, group activities, etc.)

1st Semester Grade scale: 88% - 100% A 2nd Semester Grade scale: 90% - 100% A

76% - 87%B 80% - 89% B

64% - 75%C 70% - 79% C

52% - 63% D 60% - 69% D

0% - 51% F 0% - 59% F

Your grades will be available on the web (password protected). After each exam your grade will be updated. Your grade shouldn’t be a surprise at the end of the quarter or semester. You are responsible for checking that the scores are accurate. Keep all papers to assure that your scores are entered correctly.

Homework: Homework is due the day following the assignment. Each assignment is worth 5 points. Five points will be given to an assignment if two problems I choose to grade are correct, as well as it being complete. A maximum of four points may be earned if only one of the problems I grade is correct, and a maximum of three points if neither are correct. If more time is needed on a particular assignment, you may ask for a ONE-day extension after I see an honest attempt has been made to complete the assignment. You are entitled to three late homework assignments per quarter. Other than this, no late homework will be accepted. If you have an excused absence you have as many days as you were absent to make up the homework. Only material missed due to Health or Warranted absences may be made up. Consult assignment sheets for assignments missed. If you have any questions please ask!

Quizzes: Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Most are worth between 10 to 40 points. If you are absent the day of a quiz due to a Health or a Warranted absence you will make up the quiz ASAP, usually upon your return. If you are absent for any other excused reason (sports, field trip, "other," vacation, etc.) you will earn a ZERO unless prior arrangements are made. Quizzes missed due to tardiness, a "cut," or suspension will result in a ZERO.

Tests: Tests are usually given after each chapter. While the material of the given unit is stressed, any past material is fair game for a test. They are NOT curved. If you are absent the day of a test due to "Health," you will take the test ASAP upon your return. If your absence was prolonged a test date will be set upon your return to class. If you are absent for any other excused reason (sports, field trip, "other," vacation, etc.) you will earn a ZERO unless prior arrangements are made. Tests missed due to tardiness, a "cut," or suspension will result in a ZERO. Note if you are only absent the day before the test, you will take it on the scheduled day.

Midterm / Final: We will study one book each quarter and a midterm or final will be given at the completion of each book. They are worth the equivalent of two tests, not as a percentage of your grade.

Honesty Policy: Homework can be done with a study partner. This means you should be helping each other, "coaching," not copying. Copying someone else's homework is prohibited. Instances of such copying will earn a zero on those assignments for all parties involved, whether or not permission for copying was given.

If I believe that you have cheated on an assessment, I will give you a zero on that assessment, and tell your parents, your Teacher Advisor, and the Dean of Students. If it happens again, you will be dropped from the course. Cheating will NOT be tolerated. Some examples of behaviors I will consider cheating are: talking without my permission during a test or quiz, using unauthorized notes, books, etc., of any kind during a test or a quiz, looking at another student's test or quiz during an exam period, allowing another person to look at your test or quiz during an exam period, and talking to other students in any class about a test or quiz that they have yet to take.

Attendance: Students are expected to be in class and ready to begin when the bell rings. It is school policy that a student may be dropped from class for excessive tardiness. This will be dealt with on an individual basis with a contract if necessary. Six cuts and the administration will drop you from the class.

Behavior Rules: Be Respectful. We will treat each of you with respect, and we expect you to treat each other and us with respect. Be prepared for class. Keep your language clean. Do not eat in the classroom.
