Class Rules & Policies Attendance & Tardiness: Regular attendance is required to receive the maximum benefit from the classroom instruction and other experiences. Students are encouraged to miss class only when absolutely necessary. Students excused for part of a day for a planned absence, including school related activities (field trips, athletics, etc.), medical/dental appointments, or court appearances must submit homework for classes to be missed before the absence or it won’t be accepted. Students should meet with their teacher prior to a planned absence to arrange to take the test or quizzes scheduled for the day of the absence. We will complete two projects per semester. Since you have many weeks to work on projects, late projects are not accepted. If you can’t make it to school on the due date, turn in early or arrange to have it brought to school. Tardiness can become a problem with missed instructional time and unclear expectations. The school policy on attendance and tardiness will be in effect in this class. Journal Entries: We will begin each class period with a journal entry. You are expected to be in your seat and working on this problem by the time the bell rings. If you are not in your seat when I take roll, you will be marked tardy. Since the questions are intended for you to test yourself or generate your own thinking, talking with others during this time is not allowed. Lab Activities & Lab Reports: We will do a lab activity approximately once a week. All data must be collected and processed directly in your lab sheet provided by your instructor. To collect the full credit, please make sure your lab sheet is complete, neat and readable. After grading, lab sheets will be returned to you to store in your binder for further study. Some experiments may be more complex than others and you may need to prepare a formal lab report. If you miss a lab, you need to make it up on the following Tuesday after school. It is your responsibility to let me know ahead of time that you intend to make up a lab prior to make up day. You should use the lab equipments responsibly and return them to their proper place at the end of the period. Homework: Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. By completing homework, you will better understand concepts and be more successful on weekly quizzes. In addition to problems and questions from the textbook, lab reports, projects and other assignments will need to be completed outside of class time. Expect approximately 5 hours per week of homework. Late Homework: Homework is due at the beginning of class. If you have a one day excused absence, any assignments or test/quiz due during your absence are due the day you return and will not be treated as late if they are turned in then. For longer absences, you will be given the same amount of time to complete the assignments. Late homework won’t be collected in class. Any late homework should be dated and dropped in my box on the tower building. Weekly Quizzes: Expect a quiz about once a week, many times taken directly from the homework. Quizzes will be 10-20 minutes long, and will usually relate closely to the material recently covered and discussed in class. Tardiness does not entitle you to any extra time. Missing Test: If you have an excused absence on a test date, you are required to make arrangements to make up the test the day you return to school. If no arrangements are made, or the test/quiz is not made up by this time, a score of zero will be given. Classroom Supplies: You need: pencil(s), ruler, scientific calculator (non graphing/non programmable) and a 3-ring binder which should be brought to class every day. A spiral-bound graphing notebook is recommended for note taking. Mark your supplies clearly with your name, especially your calculator. You need access to a computer with internet connection to obtain some of the class material. Please check my web page (http://www.paly.net/~geris/) to obtain the class schedule and list of assignments. Grades: Grades are weighed. So that Tests & Quizzes worth 45%, Final 15%, Homework 10%, Projects 15% and Lab reports 15% of the entire grade. The grade curve will be: 90% and above = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D and below 60% = F. If you have any questions about your grade or your progress in general please speak directly with your instructor. Grades are available to you online. Please follow the link from my web page, or go to http://www.eclassinfo.com/home.asp?id=SERIS address to check your grades. Extra Assistance: There are some excellent resources at Paly. First there are your fellow students. They will be familiar with materials covered, even those with a different instructor. Second, there are AP students, honor students and tutors. They are available for appointments thorough the A.R.C. Finally, there is me and all other Physics instructors. My prep periods are 4th & 5th. The best way to contact me is my e-mail: seris@org.
