Coach's Take

We first met Julius when he showed up to XC practice at the beginning of his sophomore year. He made it very clear that first week that he was a soccer player, and was simply doing XC to get in shape. He identified himself as a sprinter and was planning on running the 100 and 200 that track season.

After watching him run for a few weeks, it was clear that we had a special runner, and later when he realized this, soccer became a thing of the past.

As dedicated an athlete as we have, Julius has dealt with his share of problems. His first three seasons of running were plagued by hip injuries, and random sicknesses, including the whooping cough pandemic.

Finally, after a year and a half of flashes of brilliance followed by frustrating interruptions, Julius remained healthy for an entire season. The results were incredible, yet they still might only be scratching the true potential of this natural runner. He ended the season with a 1:59.08 800m and a low 50 split on our 4x400 team that placed 4th in CCS. Don't be fooled by his 4:45 mile PR and start thinking that he's only good at mid-distance. He ran that mile early season in a dual meet and could have gone *much* faster if he an opportunity in May had arisen. Project his 1200 time to get a better idea of what he was capable of over 1600m.

Julius is currently putting in a great summer's work. Slowly buliding up his mileage while always monitoring his hips and working on core strength, in hopes of having a healthy and uninterrupted senior season. If he can do this successfully, then watch out! By November this one could be special.
