Coach's Take

Watch out! Jay started taking running seriously this winter, putting in miles with Erik K and showing up to track practice in February very fit. Known for eating up hill workouts and throwing in huge surges in the middle of track workouts and races, Jay earned everyone's respect by showing off his range during his sophomore track season.

His mile time dropped almost 30 seconds over the course of the track season and he earned a spot in the FS league meet by running a 2:12 800m. In that race as a complete unknown, he made his presence felt with a patented mid-race surge, pushing the leaders and then holding on for a remarkable 7th place finish.

Now spending the summer outside of Palo Alto, Jay is training hard on his own with hopes of earning one of the much-coveted spots on this year's Hawaii trip, and also to be a factor on Paly's Varsity B squad - a team that should be able to compete with many schools' A squads. When predicting times for his junior XC season, I'd expect his improvement to be on the order of minutes, not seconds.
