Palo Alto High School           Mentor Information                                 2002 - 03

Would you or someone you know be interested  in working with bright, motivated high school science students? Have we got a deal for you! For the tenth consecutive year, we (the Science Department of Palo Alto High School) are promoting our newest crop of students eager to learn the "inner-workings" of research science. The Science Research Projects Class links high school students who wish to work as research scientists with mentors in the field.

We need your help! You can mentor our bright young women and men who have completed classes in the basic sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics). They can work to support your team in a variety of capacities.

Our students have an opportunity to:

• Interact with science at the cutting edge.
• Participate in lab work above and beyond classroom science.
• Begin their own journeys into the sciences and technologies

of the twenty-first century.

• Each mentor works with a group of one to five students on research

chosen by the mentor in consultation with the Teacher Advisor.
• Students are scheduled to work for five to eight hours per week

at the workplace of their mentor.
• The length of the projects may run for a semester or may continue

throughout the school year and beyond.
• Mentors have been recruited from scientific corporations, research

facilities, hospitals, governmental and environmental groups, and
universities.
• Projects have ranged from ecology to lasers; particle detectors to

shark biology.
