Film Composition and Literature
Fourth Quarter/Spring Semester, 2003/Paugh
"What is due and when" - The MAJOR assignment
due dates for 4th Quarter
IMPORTANT MAJOR DUE DATES AND INFORMATION
1. READ your long term/"ongoing" assignment sheet for instructions
on how to complete the film binder. This document tells you how to do
the journal, out of class film write ups and what to write for your media
articles. We have reviewed this document several times in class. Please
read it again, if necessary, and then follow the instructions. Learn from
your 3rd quarter experience and don't procrastinate!
Remember you can find the major assignments on the "paly.net"
web site under English and then my name: http://www.paly.net/~kpaugh
2. Due Dates as of Tuesday, April 21
(There may be other minor homework assignments and quizzes during 4th
quarter; keep listening and checking the white board. The MAJOR ones are
listed below.)
a. Open Note Test on Chapters 6 & 8 in Flashback (worth
50 pts.)
Period 5: Weds. April 22
Period 2: Thurs. April 23
b. Friday, May 2: Open Note Test on Chapter 10 in Flashback (worth
50 pts.) Periods 2 & 5: Friday, May 2
c. Monday, May 12 - "Artists/Lost Horizon" book unit
paper due (worth 100 pts.) Read the book, select one of the options as
listed on your assignment sheet and write/create your paper or project.
Late papers will be marked down one full grade. Even if you are absent
on May 12, make certain that I get the paper on Monday, May 12. The assignment
is a month long one, please do NOT ask for extensions. Plan ahead. (Remember,
as the assignment sheet indicated, ALSO write: THREE pages of thoughtful
entries on your book selection (Lost Horizon, Asher Lev,
Girl with the Pearl Earring or Girl in Hyacinth Blue)
REFER to this book unit's assignment sheet that I gave you at the beginning
of this book unit. Return the novel with the paper.
d. October Sky Book Unit - I will distribute these books on May
12 (if you want/ need it earlier, ask me for a copy.) You must read the
book and write three journal entries - your reactions, comments, reflections
- three complete pages total (reflections about the novel, connections
between the novel and your life, other stories, films etc. but NOT plot
summaries.) There is NO other paper assignment for this book. :-) The
Journal Entries are very important. Write an entry after reading 1/3 of
the book, then another entry after reading 2/3 of the book, and the third
entry should be written after finishing the book. Caution: the film is
different from the book.
e. Friday, May 16 (or before) Final Project Proposal - A paragraph neatly
typed and carefully thought out which describes your final project. What
are you doing? What is your intent/goal? What and how will you present
the information to the class? Who are you working with IF you are doing
the project with one or two other people. What, if any, equipment do you
need to present your project to the class?
f. Tuesday, May 20 - "Mid-quarter" Journal Check - I will give
you a list the week before this date reminding you of what needs to be
in the journal by this date. (Worth 100 points)
g. Monday, May 26 - MEMORIAL DAY - Holiday! No School
h. Friday, May 30 - Film Binders due (worth 300 points) -- Refer to "ongoing
assignment" instruction sheet - EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ASSIGNMENT -
DON'T PROCRASTINATE and SUBMIT ON TIME!
i. Friday, May 30 - ALL books must be returned on this date. (Flashback
and The Critical Eye and October Sky plus any other
books you still "owe me." Points will be deducted from the binder
grade if your books are not returned by this date - ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Don't
have your yearbook distribution held up by late books. Get them in on
this date.
j. Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5 - Final Exam: Your projects
are presented to the class throughout the week. All projects should be
"ready to go" on Monday, June 2. Each student has five minutes
to present his/her project. Refer to the end of the "ongoing assignment"
sheet for ideas and listen to the explanations/examples given in class.
